Come and Enjoy – OakTable World 2015

Yep, its free, its cool and a lot of fun. During Oracle OpenWorld 2015, the…

Result Cache 2

Following on from my earlier posting of problems with temporary table and the PL/SQL result cache (a combination which the manuals warn you against) here’s another problem – again, to a large degree, self-inflicted.

Imagine you have a complex report involving a large number of financial transactions with a need to include calculations about current exchange rates. Unfortunately the rules about calculating the appropriate exchange rate for any transaction are complex and you find you have a choice between adding 6 tables with outer joins and a couple of aggregate (max) subqueries to the base query or calling a PL/SQL function to calculate the exchange rate for each row. I’m going to create an extremely simplified model of this requirement:

If you want something done, ask a busy person…

This is a re-post I originally made on the ODTUG website on 17-Jan 2013 at the beginning of my two-year term on the board of directors...

This past weekend, I attended my first face-to-face Board of Directors meeting with ODTUG. Monty Latiolais, current president of ODTUG, asked me to let him know if there was anything “less than stellar” about my experience, and I have say the answer is “no”.  It was a stellar experience, all weekend.  Here’s why…

Friday Philosophy – Antisocial Social Media and Sociopaths

Twice, on consecutive days a week or so back, I realised that someone I knew on Twitter but did not know in real life… was someone I knew in real life. But I’d never made the connection! With one person it was not that their real name was missing from their twitter profile, it was just my brain had linked all I knew about them to their handle. In the other case, as far as I can see there is nothing to link their slightly obscure handle to their physical persona, despite the fact they are tweeting quite often about Oracle and also present at conferences. So that was simply not playing fair to hide their real identity in that way and I feel slightly aggrieved.

exitcommit … or your career down the drain

I recently posted a little video on the ‘exitcommit’ option in SQL Plus, adding a theatrical drama to present a worst case scenario of potentially destroying a Production system.  Take 3 mins to have a chuckle here.

My predecessor Natalka Roshak tweeted an interesting followup that I thought I would share, namely, if you’re a regular SQL Plus user, you should definitely take the time to check out the documentation on ‘exitcommit’ and its relationship to other related variables within SQL Plus.

Because you probably want to make sure you have got everything set just right !
