Delphix focuses on virtualizing non-production environments, easing the pressure on DBAs, resources and budget, but there is a second use case for product that we don’t discuss nearly enough.
Protection from data loss.
I’ve been going through some SERIOUS training in just over a week.
After what seems like eons since we first started on it, I’m excited to announce a new book I co-authored is finally out. The book is called “Building Database Clouds in Oracle 12c” and is available on Amazon. Of course, it really isn’t that long ago that we started writing the book, but there’s been a lot happening between then and now!
The book was co-authored with Tariq Farooq and Sridhar Avantsa. Tariq asked me to write the material on Enterprise Manager (chapters 4 – 8 in the book), which was done over a number of releases of EM12c. We deliberately left the material on the versions it was written on, because people are still on a variety of different releases, so you can see how it applies in the version you’re using.
From a content perspective, this is what the book covers:
Borrowing from Wikipedia, the term DevOps is defined as…
Enterprise Manager 12c introduced a lot of functionality around cloning Oracle databases and refreshing the data once it was cloned. You can see some of the earlier material I have posted on this area in the following posts:
The sales, support and technical teams were brought into the Denver Tech Center office to do some advanced training in Hybrid Cloud. There were many take-aways from the days we spent in the office, (which is saying a lot- most of you likely know how much I hate working anywhere but from home… :)) and I thought I would share a bit of this information with those th
How long does it take to create a clone of an Oracle RAC database? How complicated is it? How much experience does it take?
How about no experience and 5 minutes with a few mouse clicks?
The following video shows how to create a full RAC clone of a RAC source database in 5 minutes using Delphix. To see how Dephix links to the source database see the second video below.
Here is the RAC Delphix setup video, which similarly was finished in 5 minutes
About year ago or more, Oracle came out with a way to create thin clone copies of a database in EM 12c called “Snap Clone”.
Performance testing requires full, fresh data
Many organizations don’t even attempt to test performance until very late in their development cycle because it is only in the UAT (or equivalent) environment that they have a full copy of their production data set. Errors and inefficiencies found at this stage are expensive to fix and are often promoted to production due to pressures from the business to meet release schedules.
