Conferences and the Etiquette of Meeting New People

One of the reasons I like user group conferences is meeting new people in my “area” – these people at the conference not only like technology and probably some of the same technology I do but, as they are at a conference, are probably inclined to learn stuff, meet people and maybe share ideas. I’m not actually very good face-to-face socially with people I do not know, so I like to tilt things in my favour if I can!

But sometimes you have odd experiences.

Conference Organisation from the Inside – UKOUG Tech14

An interesting experience I have had this year is being more involved in helping organise the annual UKOUG Oracle Technical Conference – Tech14. I fully intended to blog about things as we progressed, but it never happened got going so I did not.. But I thought it would be interesting to do a couple of blogs about it now, for anyone interested, as the conference itself approaches.

If you have never helped organise a conference or user group meeting then you probably think there is not a lot of work involved. You would be quite wrong. If you have been a volunteer at one, as in you have presented or chaired sessions, then you will have more understanding – but still probably fall short of the mark in estimating the effort involved. There is a lot involved.

UKOUG Operating System and Storage Event – 28th May

Just a quick note to say the call for papers is open for the UKOUG Operating System and Storage Event in Birmingham on the 28th May. To quote the website,

“This event will cover Linux and Solaris Administration, Storage and Network Administration, Virtualisation and Engineered Systems.

UKOUG Operating Systems & Storage Event takes place in Birmingham on 28th May and will become a key event for DBAs, OS, Network and Storage Administrators who support an Oracle Infrastructure.”

Hope to see you there!

Cheers

OUG Ireland 2014 : I’m going to be there. Are you?

Earlier in the week I got confirmation I have two papers selected for OUG Ireland 2014.

  • PL/SQL : Stop Making The Same Performance Mistakes
  • An Oracle DBA’s Guide to WebLogic Server

You can see the full agenda here.

I got on the net to check flight prices and Ryanair were doing a round trip for £13. The booking fee on the travel site I used was more then the flight costs, so the total flight costs came to £30. :) Needless to say I booked them straight away, so I will be there representing OTN and the Oracle ACE Program.

APAC OTN Tour 2013

Just a quick plug for an upcoming OTN tour, that I’m not on this year.

  • Auckland, New Zealand : 8th November (agenda)
  • Perth, Australia : 12th-13th November (agenda)
  • Tokyo, Japan : 13th-15th November
  • Beijing, China : 17th-18th November
  • Guangzou, China : 19th November

I attended the OTN Asia Pacific Tour in 2011, which included some of these locations. Hopefully I will get to do it again in the near future. :)

Like any conferences, these events are all about the attendees, so the more people that turn up and the more vocal the attendees, the better the events are.

Spring is a very active conference season for me. I might be going to half a dozen conferences in 3-4 months. That’s a lot of travel, but I look forward to all of them. The conference I’m probably looking forward to the most this year is IOUG COLLABORATE. It might be because:

DOAG 2012 Conference

This is just a friendly reminder that I'll be talking at this year's DOAG Oracle conference about "Cost-Based Optimizer Basics" on Thursday, the 22nd of November, "Raum 1" at 13:00.

Additionally, I've reserved a slot at the "Unconference" (15:00 the same day) where I plan to present some of the interesting stuff that I cover as part of my "Parallel Execution Masterclass".

And soon the technical content will be back at this blog where I have lots of interesting stuff in the pipeline, mainly covering Parallel Execution topics.

DOAG 2012

This year again I'm going to present at the DOAG 2012 conference in November. Since it is a popular topic I decided to talk about "Cost-Based Optimizer Basics" there, too. According to the official schedule the presentation will take place on Thursday, the 22nd of November, "Raum 1" at 13:00.

Like last year, I'll also try to do some Unconference sessions in addition - if it is going to take place, which I don't know yet.

I'll post some updates as soon as I know more details.

Presenting at UKOUG 2012…

I’ve got confirmation that I’m presenting at the UKOUG 2012 conference in December. As I’ve said before, I like seeing places, but I hate the travelling, so I’m not looking forward to having to get to the ICC in Birmingham. That’s one killer 4 mile journey I’m going to have to endure… :)

See you there!

Cheers

BGOUG: I’m on my way…

I’m at the airport waiting for my flight to Sofia (via Munich), on my way to the BGOUG conference in Hissarya.

It’s early and I’m totally knackered. I had a killer tabata-style circuits class last night and a nightmare tabata-style kettlebell class the night before. I still have bruises from the latter. If only I could stop eating rubbish I would look quite buff. :)

This is my last overseas event of the year and I’m glad it is the BGOUG event. Anything else and I think I would be looking for an excuse not to go. It will be great to get back amongst my Bulgarian buddies again.

Cheers
