Keynote: Oracle 12c Gee Whiz Features

Yet another Oracle version is out and so are about 1500 new features in a variety of areas. Some are well marketed (e.g. pluggable database or the multitenant option) and some shine by their sheer usefulness. And there are some that do not get a whole lot of coverage but are are hidden gems. In this session you learned 12 broad areas of Oracle Database 12c I feel are worth learning about to make your job as a DBA or developer better, easier, smoother and, in some cases, even make it possible what was hitherto impossible or impractical.

Scalar Subqueries in Oracle SQL WHERE clauses (and a little bit of Exadata stuff too)

My previous post was about Oracle 12c SQL Scalar Subquery transformations. Actually I need to clarify its scope a bit: the previous post was about scalar subqueries inside a SELECT projection list only (meaning that for populating a field in the query resultset, a subquery gets executed once for each row returned back to the caller, instead of returning a “real” column value passed up from a child rowsource).

I did not cover an other use case in my previous post – it is possible to use scalar subqueries also in the WHERE clause, for filtering the resultset, so let’s see what happens in this case too!

Oracle 12c: Scalar Subquery Unnesting transformation

I promised to write about Oracle 12c new features quite a while ago (when 12c got officially released), but I was actually on (a long) vacation then and so many cool 12c-related white-papers and blog entries started popping up so I took it easy for a while. I plan to be focusing on the less known low-level internal details anyway as you see from this blog entry.

As far as I can remember, Oracle has been able to unnest regular subqueries since 8i and merge views since Oracle 8.0.

So, I clarified below that this blog post is comparing the “Scalar Subqueries in SELECT projection list” to “Regular non-scalar Subqueries in WHERE clause”. I am writing a Part 2 to explain the scalar subqueries in WHERE clause.

How to quickly build standby database and setup DataGuard configuration using Oracle 12c

With every release of Oracle database there are new possibilities to build a required solution (ex. standby database) faster and with fewer steps. This is not official guide but rather a mix of Oracle 12c functionality used to build DataGuard configuration using RMAN and DataGuard Broker.

Assumptions:
  • There is a database which will be used as primary.
  • New listener will be added to support standby traffic

DataGuard – Far Sync – part 1 – simple configuration

Oracle introduced a new feature for DataGuard called Far Sync. This configuration is design to support synchronous redo transport between primary and standby database which are far apart. In usual configuration synchronous redo transport between data centre in Europe and US is possible but inefficient from the primary database performance perspective. Every commit has to be written locally to redo logs and send to standby with confirmation – a network round trip between Europe and US is a significant delay for every commit operation in synchronous mode.
